Album Review: Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding

But the Oasis fans will believe the Beady Eye album is good, because they need it to be. Oasis fans are like creationists, they know they believe in a crock of s**t but it's their crock of s**t and they're not about to let any educated ponce from that London come along and tell them that there's other better music they could be listening to. They chose Oasis as their band and that's how it's going to stay. You can see them in the street on Saturdays, shopping with the wife and kids. They've got the Britpop hair, a Ben Sherman and a Harrington, even though that look is 16 years old now. They'll still be dressed like that in 30 years time, like greying rockabillies and punks with bus passes, they have found their look for life.

So the question isn't whether we will like the Beady Eye album, of course we won't. Even the talented brother ran out of ideas and songs after just two albums. No, the question is whether this is an album that can rally the faithful, keep their spirits up while the world leaves them behind, in the terrifying Oasis-less future.

Well, yes. This is exactly the album the Gallagher believers have been waiting for. And it's exactly the album Liam would want to make to prove to his brother he doesn't need him. Of course it doesn't prove anything of the sort. What it proves is that Andy "the one out of Ride" Bell and Gem "the one out of Heavy Stereo" Archer are able enough session musicians to know how to sound the way The Beatles sound in Liam's head - i.e. stripped of subtleties and magic and reduced to trebly plodding rock, basic barroom boogie and Lennon snarl. Every track does what it's supposed to and sounds like it should - derivative, unmemorable and unremarkable.

It's a shame Liam can't, like a 70s comedian, simply make his living from chatshows. He's hilarious in interview. But there's no escaping the fact the man is a f**king idiot, when you read the ridiculous titles of some of these songs: Standing On The Edge Of The Noise (snrk!), Kill For A Dream (grnk!), Bring The Light (ha ha!). He must've phoned Richard Ashcroft first to make sure he'd not already used those. The high/low point is Beatles And Stones. Yes, he really has called a song Beatles And Stones. When it comes to self-awareness, Liam doesn't even register on the scale. "I'm gonna stand the test of time, like Beatles and Stones" he whines. No you're not. Liam Gallagher is to John Lennon what Shakin Stevens was to Elvis. That's how you'll be remembered, except by the dwindling few who'll keep the dismal, unchanging faith.

"Back then we was all mad for it, son. Music was better in them days..." No it wasn't granddad. It was s**t and it still is.

Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding is out on February 28. Like you care.
