I'd like to lower the action on my acoustic

It's about 3-4mm on the 12th fret and I'd like it to be a bit lower. Should I do it by grinding the brigde plastic piece or by adjusting the truss rod of the neck?

The action on my Simon & Patrick acoustic was ridiculously high when I bought it.. barre chords were like pressing down on cheese wire!! Took it to a guitar shop to get it done.. they filed down the bridge and hacksawed into the nut so the strings could sink in deeper.. not sure if they made any truss rod adjustments. I think it was about £25 in total and they threw in a set of strings as a bonus!

Thanks for the link, Mike! Gonna have to read that through and look if I want to do anything to it by myself. Simply taking it to the guitar shop woudn't be a bad idea either, although as a poor student I want to try and save any penny I can.:d
