I've always been told by numerous producers, AC30s sound best when they're really loud. That's gotta be a tough position to be in...

"Gosh, in order to make this AC30 sing, I have to crank the volume. What's a boy to do?" *turns up amp to 15* followed quickly by one of these

It's definitely one of the best amps made, and it's been used for recording purposes by just about every classic british rock band to set foot in a studio. It's a legend among amps. Most the bands you see using stacks and stacks of marshalls used AC30s for the recordings, and use the higher wattage marshalls for live gigs.

It does need to be turned up to attain that full tube saturation, but the clean channel sounds great even at moderate volumes. It takes pedals very well also- works great with a tubescreamer.

Seriously. A humbucker-equipped guitar into an AC30 with a tubescreamer in the chain is THE Classic British Rock sound. I don't know what else to say about it. Changing out the speakers for Celestion Blues (if it doesn't already have them, but those are pricey models) is the only thing you'd ever really want to do to it, and isn't 100% necessary anyway. If you were to tell me I could have any one guitar and any one amp for the rest of my life, and never play any others, it would be a Gibson Les Paul Standard (traditional) into an AC30.
